Brands are a way to have a shorthand and an identity around a product (or more typically a grouping of products and/or services).
In turn this allows for conversations to occur, for referrals and discussions to happen and for the company (or individual) to listen to and respond to those conversations.
Without a brand, without a clear and unique identity then conversations can't even happen.
