In order to improve the position of your website in search rankings, you need to keep certain factors in mind. Start with keyword research and follow the following measures for their effective implementation:
Your keywords should be balanced – The keyword that you use in your content must not be very difficult or uncommon; something that users rarely search for. It should be a blend of simple short tail keywords and difficult long tail keywords. This will make your content appear amongst the top search results and earn you more traffic than other sites.
Try to use more long tail keywords – This is because long term keywords receive a better rank on search results, compared to short-term keywords. For instance, “buying mobile phones online” is a better keyword than “mobile phones” and will get you more traffic than the latter.
Focus on Geotargeting – Try to include the names of specific geographical locations in your keyword. This will bring more traffic to your website. For example “Chinese restaurants in Kolkata” is a better keyword than “Chinese restaurants”.
Don’t ignore keyword research tools – Keyword research tools like Moz, SpyFu, Google Keyword Planner, etc help you enhance the SEO standards of your content.
After you have decided on the right keyword for your content, make sure you abide by the following on-page optimization factors:
Page Title / Title Tag – A page title is one of the most essential elements of on-page optimization as it is the key set of words that elucidates the entire content of a web page. It can be edited easily as it only comprises around fifty to sixty characters. An effective page title should always contain the keyword in it.
Meta Description – The meta description is an extract consisting of not more than 300 characters. Its purpose is to offer a brief insight into the main content of the page. The meta description should be appropriately optimized by using the keyword in it at least twice. Only then will the search engines display the description in their search results.
Page URL – It is the link of the webpage link that is displayed on the address bar of the browser. URL should always contain the keyword.
Header Tags (H1, H2 etc) – The header tag, i.e., <h1> in HTML, is usually the largest text that is generally used for the main title of the content, or some other text in the content that needs to be highlighted. HTML has other header tags as well, such as h2, h3, and h4. These tags are used more for the section headings in a web page. Header tags should contain keywords.
Page Content – This is the main textual content of your webpage which should ideally be comprised of around 1000 words. The least it should contain is 400 to 500 words. The first hundred words should include the keyword at least once. The keyword density in the entire content should ideally be 1 to 1.2 percent. All in all, the text should not be overloaded with lengthy sentences and complex phrases. It should be quite easy to read and comprehend.
Image ALT Tag – The purpose of an Image ALT Tag is to provide the images in your content with a direct text alternative. This is quite an important step since images, in their original form, cannot be recognized by search bots. ALT tags should always contain keywords.
