  When you design a logo or icon for your company, you can relate your product to your company's vision and mission. For example: You are operating a book store and offering books at affordable price to all students (mission). Then, you can have a student icon holding/reading a book as your icon/logo.

  I agree you should hire a professional to do it for you. A brand logo is something that you don't want to change every now and then so make sure that the logo you will choose for your brand is something that you really want.

  You should start with a concept, a vision. Try to recreate it using Paint, Gimp, or whatever works for you best. Sometimes I just use Canva to make a sketch version of my future logo.
