EdL,Sorry this isn`t a first-hand story. I`m familiar with a company called MWI. They are very competent and have several large companies in their portfolio. I recommend taking a look at their website (www.mwi.com) and then calling some of their clients (www.mwi.com/clients.html) to see what their experience was/is. Another big one is SEOmoz (www.seomoz.com). Their site has good articles and tools for getting started too. Again, I`d see who they`ve done work for and then contact them [SEOmoz`s clients] directly. Steer clear of any that claim to be able to GUARANTEE high placement in the search engines as this is absolutely impossible. The best you can do is look at their past work and see how the experience was for their clients. Ryan

I hired and fired a couple firms before my partner and I decided to learn the methodology ourselves. Over the past year or so we have increased traffic and sales conversions exponentially. There are over 150 organic links on google.com dedicated to our portal which we do not pay anything for.
We recently started doing this work for other websites and currently have 3 contracts we are working on. Our fees are so much lower they are not comparable to what I found while I was hiring firms to do SEO for me.
