I would also add that you have to be realistic about your capabilities: do not underestimate your value, but you should never promise to do something you cannot follow through. It will ruin your reputation forever.

But I also like using a 'piggyback' technique. Find competitors in your industry (preferably an agency) and pitch your services there. If the timing is right, they're highly likely to hire you to take on their extra work. No marketing on your part, no dealing with client issues, and the agency is responsible for paying you on time.
