marketplace e-commerce structures possible without a mediator?

So I hired an offshore developer from Nepal to set up a marketplace website - something like Etsty where vendors sell their products and make their money while the 'House' makes a commission. Anyways he's halfway done and now tells me we're going to need some mediator like Stripe or Moneris or someother merchant service that would also take commission. I figured he'd be able to code it himself because he's a computer programmer, but apparently not. Im wondering how Etsy, FireBox or those sites did it. My developer is claiming it isnt possible, theres just too much data for our websites backend to handle (I didnt even understand his excuse). Im not sure if he's lying because he just doesnt know how to do it. Any help/advice is much appreciated.
