Online platform apps done right

Hi,
I've been discussing on my blog how platform apps when done incorrectly can provide value to the user but don't help to grow the platform and the community as a whole. I use the language learning community Memrise as an example to discuss the issue.

What do you think about the topic? Do you know good examples of apps that achieve to capture value for the platform as whole? Or other examples that show room for improvement?
