How do you choose an IaaS provider to power IT for your startup?

Starting a new company involves an immense number challenges ranging from product development, building sales channels, operations, IT, capital management amongst many others. I thought it would be interesting to hear how other entrepreneurs go about choosing a data center to trust with providing the infrastructure required to power their new business. Where do you start and what qualities do you look for? How do you handle these decisions in the absence of a CIO on your newly formed team?
