Email marketing is a type of direct digital marketing that uses electronic mail (email), used as a way to reach consumers directly. Unlike spam, email marketing reaches those interested in your business’ area of expertise. The information is sent out more like a laser guided missile than a bomb. No matter what you’re selling, it is a way to reach thousands of potential customers directly at a relatively low cost when compared to advertising or other forms of media exposure. It brings your business’ message through an attractive mix of graphics, text and links directly to people who may have never heard of your business or considered your products, but are knowledgeable and interested in your business’ area of expertise.

Email marketing is used in a number of ways by organizations and marketers for brand and customer loyalty building, acquiring or converting customers, company advertisements, or for communicating promotional offers and more.

Please let me know if you need further information about email marketing.

I see a lot of guys answered this question for you..
Simply put, email marketing is promoting your content/yourself/your prouct to your audience.
Now how do you get that audience?

Well sometimes in your life you have visited certain blog and there was a pop up saying like "Sign up to get this free ebook" and you found that to be interesting and you entered your email to get the free ebook. Now what happens is that you have signed up to their mailing list and they can send you promotional content or engage you through your email.

I would suggest you to visit HubSpot academy as there is a great email marketing course which you can pass and get certified. It covers a lot, from basics to more advanced things. From there you can start to advance your knowledge.

Email marketing is, quite simply, using the tools of email to deliver advertising messages. The vast majority of Internet users have email accounts which allow them to receive an almost unlimited number of messages instantly.

Email marketing is simply using email to communicate with potential and current customers, and can take several forms, including information about your goods and services, sales, a weekly newsletter, valuable content, etc.

    It has several notable advantages:

    1) Opt-in. People should always be required to opt-in to your email list (usually through a form on your website). That way you know they're receptive to your messages, and you're not wasting time and effort emailing people who have no interest in your product or service.

    2) You own the list. If you're marketing via social media or publishing content on someone else's platform for leads you run the risk of losing that channel if the other company goes out of business or changes their algorithms (as frequently happens with Facebook and Google). With email, you still have dedicated access to all of these potential customers.

    3) Effective frequency + the "know, like and trust" factor. There's a marketing concept called effective frequency which states that clients need repeated exposures to a brand or company because they will buy from them. Email is an easy, effective channel to get those repeated exposures, and it helps your readers begin to know, like and trust you -- all of which are key elements in converting them into customers.

    4) Automation. Once you've written an email or series of emails welcoming customers most email marketing solutions (MailChimp, Drip, GetResponse, Active Campaign, etc.) can automatically send that email again when you set behavioral triggers, like someone signing up for your list, or visiting a certain page or filling out a form. This decreases so much of the work because you can setup drip campaigns to nurture clients and sell products and services and be very hands off after it's setup.

Great points, @kdcallag. In particular your points about frequency and email automation are intriguing. Your company should have some kind of inbound marketing strategy set up that regularly contacts your mailing list -- which can be automatically triggered through actions, as you pointed out. You can then group contacts into personas and lists based on their website behavior.

Frequency can be difficult to determine. How often is too often when it comes to email? Is sending one email per week not enough? How many emails per week is the "sweet spot?' I think it depends on your industry, and your company's engagement and unsubscribe rate.

Email Marketing was just a passive communication medium a couple of years of ago; After the transition Email Marketing is no longer called passive - It's proved that it is the most Cost Effective and highly Responsive Channel for Marketing.
The traditional email Marketing had limited choices like delivering emails through single SMTP server, sending bulk emails all at once and getting 80% of them bounced back but now its the Cloud SMTPs age :) Technological advancements have made a mark on Email marketing platforms, you can send emails from more 2 SMTPs, micro deliver the bulk emails through more than 1 SMTP helps in accomplishing the results! EasySendy Pro is one such platform with Cloud SMTP service.
