There are some basic / standard rules to follow to help search engine results. Of course first you need to decide on the keywords you want to target.... that is a whole other subject and process - to select the keywords that will give you the best result.
A few basics - use you targeted keywords in:
your URL (domain name AND web page url)
web page title (each page should have a unique title
h1, h2, h3... tags
bold text
in-bound (links from other sites/directories/forum signatures) and in-site links (links to other web pages on your site)
page content
alt image tags
