Banner Exchange Helpful?

oboyoboy subscriber Posts: 3
I have one page in my web presentation http://photo.hlehnerer.com/Resources.html that has helpful link mostly related to photography. Now I was thinking to add on the bottom a Banner Exchange. Are Banner Exchanges helpful or just a waist of time? Here is a list of a view:

Banner exchanges are not a help for your search results, but might bring traffic to your site if someone clicks on your banner (that is displayed on the other site).

Banners were more popular a few years ago....before adsense and content related advertizing/links.

Personally, I hardly ever click on a banner and I would not suggest putting a banner at the top of your web page (that`s where most banner exchanges like or require your to put the banner).

    Thank you Roland!

I would only do it on the bottom of this page http://photo.hlehnerer.com/Resources.html. And it would be all about adding traffic to my website. I added this particular page to have a place to add link that I like to add on my website but keep it away from the rest of my site.

So it probably will not hurt my presentation or search results?

Don`t waste your time with banner exchanges. Ten years ago banner ads were all the rage, but the Internet has evolved significantly since then, and so have traffic generating methods. Also, the clickthrough rate for banner ads is abysmal, averaging a pitiful .3% clickthrough ratio (Source: New Architect, Feb. 2003).

In fact, the banner ad market is so depressed that  many advertising companies are just giving away their banner ad space for next to nothing.

Yes, banner advertising is extremely affordable these days, because no one is buying it!

Thank you DKing! What other way can you suggest for free advertisement to increase traffic?   You`re quite welcome, oboy!  If you want "real" traffic, you`re going to have to make an investment of either time, money or both. I choose to invest time, because of the long term benefits. In fact, I can`t remember the last time I actually had to spend money to generate traffic - though there`s nothing wrong with doing that..
Most of my traffic comes from organic SEO, as a result of the hundreds of articles I`ve written. Dozens of websites have picked up my articles and published them, so I also get a lot of exposure that way as well. I also receive a significant amount of traffic from my forum postings. Those two methods work extremely well for me, but I invest a lot of time into doing those things, because of the ROI.
If you choose to invest money in advertising , I recommend pay-per-click and/or ezine advertising, combined with some method of offline advertising. Press releases aren`t a bad idea either.

    Thank Dale for the suggestions!

Unfortunately I don`t have money in the moment to invest in advertisement! So for now I have to stick with whatever I can get for free. I do try to optimize for SEO. So if you search in Google for "Ojai Photo" or "Ojai Photos" I am close to the top. Ojai is the name of my town. I also generate traffic from forums. But I still only have about 20-100 visits a day. That is what Google Analytics is telling me.

So any other suggestions for free advertisements are more then welcome.  Edit: I isn`t unfriendly, it is unfortunately... I guess don`t always trust the spellchecker. Sorry for the exchanged word.
