Ok.....we all know that for most website owners the purpose of having a website is to make money. Either by generating leads for your business or making sales online. But how do you make the most of the visitors who happen upon your page? For those of us in the Internet marketing business we call this website monetization.

The key to any good website and its ability to make money is traffic. You MUST have visitors in order to consider monetization. Step one to any good online venture is making sure that you can drive traffic. Start with making sure your website is optimized for search engine results. Next, utilize EVERY other tool for driving traffic: blogs, e-mail marketing, pay-per-click, social networking etc.....

Monetization Options:

Google Adsense:

Google offers a way for you to place sponsored ads on your website realted to your websites theme or products. Signing up is free and Google does a good job walking you through a step by step process to get started. Once you place the ads on your website, you will be paid a percentage of the pay-per-click cost everytime someone clicks on an ad on your website. You must understand that this is no way to get rich quick and each click might pay you pennies, but pennies can ad up.

Affiliate Banners and Text Links:

We have all seen them, the large flashy banners on websites we visit. These banners are usually placed on websites through an affiliate program. By owning a website you are automatically considered a "publisher" in the eyes of the Internet world. Publishers can choose to become an affiliate for companies looking to capitalize on your websites traffic. There are many affiliate websites that will give you as a "publisher" the option of accepting affiliate offers. You simply find companies that offer affiliate banners that would be applicable to your website, apply to their program, and if approved, receive the banners to place on your website. Some companies have instant approvals and others require a mannual approval and they will look at your website and make a determination. You will be paid according to that companies offer. Most will pay a commission on a purchase or pay you per lead. So everytime someone clicks on a banner or text link and makes a purchase or subsribes to an offer, you get paid. Many savvy internet marketers make a living through affiliate marketing. Here is a good place to start, but do your research.

The real key of turning browsers into buyers is to collect their information upon arrival so that you can build relationship, trust and provide value to them over time so that you can bring in future sales or even push them through the sales funnel.

not just that, but also the concept of providing top quality information and warming up your visitor to make that click!  it is the concept of pre selling or soft selling. often underestimated and rarely have i seen it done. perhaps the reason why most such sites fail?
