How To Promote/Market Adult Material

edited July 2014 in Marketing
I have developed initmacy manuals that I have no idea how to market. My problem is that adult material tend to be on either side of a very thin line. It can be informational sexual material or ceative filth. Even if I were to get it on Ebay, how do I market on the net? My topics are racey but my material is fun and informative (educational to say the least). It is not raunchy or tasteless. I offer tips, tricks, products, and things of that nature. My main goal is to promote sexual health and intimacy.
Target market: Women ages 21-35, any race, any income level.

Ellay,Your best bet is to market your web site / products through fliers and posters until you have an audience (demographics). The problem with your line of products is that people are close minded. Religion has really put a huge BLOCK on the word "SEX". I really don`t understand their mentality, but what is funny to me is that "They oppose to a man and a woman having a sexual relationship, but yet you hear in the news that father so and so was convicted of molesting a "boy". I guess they are 100% on pedaphilia and homosexuality, catch my drift? Another thing you can do is use constant contact to help you market your products to friends, and people you meet. What you are going to have to do, is create a list of subscribers and you can email them a Newsletter every week, every day as much as you want. Here try this software for free. CONSTANT CONTACT Its free to try. I would use this to start getting my business out there.

I think it`s interesting that there are so many people in the world, yet in most communities it is frowned upon to discuss the act of sex.Sorry this doesn`t answer your question, but it does echo your position about thin lines... Why are they so thin? Don`t people know the difference between fornication and sexual intimacy?Maybe I am the person who needs educated.

Iouone2,So true... the funny thing of it, she is trying to educate people, trying to teach people how to spice up their relationship or marriage. As opposed to the "Materialistic Rap world", it seems like 9 out of 10 songs depict the wowan as a sexual "Object" or a "garden tool"(hoe) its like every other video they are showing some never heard of artist in a Ferrari, Rolls Royce, etc... And, society has accepted this. Society, likes this stuff. But when you use the word sex on  it`s own, its like you open the gates of hell. I think she should give it a different spin, avoid using the word sex, adult material and so forth.

Thanks everyone! And the reason that it is so difficult is that even when I type in sexual topics I get a million porn sites as opposed to sexual health and intimacy sites. And if you click on one link (for reasearch purposes), now you have nude people pop-ups all over the screen which looks weird when my husband walks by the computer.....seriously!
And getting contacts the old fashined way....talking to people and creating a  mailing list is a great idea....that may work!
And the mailing list broker.....sounds expensive but very good for business because this type of thing is something you can`t just spam people with. I remember getting an email with the subject "Orgasms Anyone?"...As open as I am to intimacy, I was appalled that right between my Daily Yahoo Horoscope and Cable Bill Online mail was this email just glaring.....If I had subscribed....that would have been different but I was spammed sexual filth and I didn`t like that!

Onthebeach, That`s to show you how far the sensorship laws have gone. Here is my suggestion to you guys marketing adult items. One of the biggest Internet Security company is Net Nanny. What I would do is register with net nanny, and create a splash page (a landing page) where the customer has to click the "I am Over 18" button. Along with that, use a disclaimer on the bottom. Or follow what Victoria Secrets is doing http://www.victoriassecret.com/</A>
You notice how they don`t have any bare skin on the front? follow their format. I think the reason why youre getting the dirty end of the stick is because, there`s no landing page that releases all liability from you. Kids these days will browse through a lingerie shop just to get a thrill, Either create a nice and tasty landing page for your clients or register with Netnanny.  But I think that your best approach is give your site a tastefull landing page. Don`t get me wrong, you have some beautiful models. But being that the people at MSN are against sex. That is all you can do..

Vicki, I totally understand where you are coming from. but remember, having a landing page like Victoria Secrets, in no way would it hinder your business. Think of it as a promotion page. That is where you advertise, all your items. I know you are trying to follow the three click rule, View, add to cart and purchase. You can achieve that either way, by linking your specials to the item. you would still get the same results. And as for parent`s being more careful with their children I agree with you. As for those annoying porn screens that won`t go away, if you ever get in trouble with that, instead of closing them and having another show up. Collapse the windows and then right click and hit the "Close group" tab, you won`t have to shut your computer down. Im not into porn, or goto raunchy sites, but as a consultant and web developer, you have to learn the ropes in order for you to know what you are talking about. It`s just a suggestion. have you ever tried to submit your web site on your own? So let me ask you? If MSN is being cautious, what seach engines allow you to advertise?

Have you ever tried, submitting your web site to all search engines? or are you concentrating on Yahoo and Google? Although, they are well know company`s you are missing out on Ask Jeeves (ask.com), Exactseek, WebSquash, Dmoz (aol), Alexa, Momma Seach, Altavista, HotBot, and about 1600 other small search engines. What about Newsletter Promotions? Are you doing that? Im assuming you have lots of clients, why not send your clients specials of the month and red light specials? The key to the game is "Keep them coming back"... As for the Orginal posting on this subject, why not collaborate with eachother, now you have another product to advertise.

Great info from Cartess3, as always!  I tried to advertise my lingerie site on MSN, and they refused my listings because of adult content.  I could not use the word "sexy" in my advertisments.  I`ve submitted my site to directories that refused to list my site because of adult content.  I haven`t figured out why people are so embarassed by the topic or suggestion of sex.  A healthy sex and fantasy life within a marriage or relationship is normal.  Sounds like you are offering a great product and I wish you well in your business.  Vicki

Not everyone thinks as what you are of course when they see that word there attention catches there but still we cant weigh everyone in the same plates hope you understood there will be a genuine way for everything i feel.

Marketing adult material is very sensitive. One should be very careful on the event his is preparing to promote an adult product. There shouldn`t be any issues related to any individual. Most of the things are related to self satifaction. For this purpose internet has become a safest and guided way. It can be potted under any search engine or avail a SEO.

Whenever we have to place the ad regarding to promote the adult material, it is suggested that it should be viewed by the adult alone, not the children. We have to redirect the ad to another browser, when a child (under the age 15) tries to open it. All the sites which are imposing these ads should be kept in private, and those people who satisfy the particular age group can read.

I have that the same problem with promoting Confadate.  We offer "pre-date" background checks for men and women who "meet" someone on line and want to know if they are who they say they are or, heaven forbid, a sexual predator.  To me it makes perfect sense to find out, but many do not understand that a background check is public information...no privacy violations here.  I wish you luck.

Adult entertainment companies were the first to figure out how to profitably sell content on the Internet, and that they have continually found new and inventive ways to take advantage of the interactive medium while exciting their audiences.

Mike, Even if you add a Huge Button that says "Click here if you`re 18" what is the possibility that a 10 or 15 year old may want to click it? I would say about 95% correct? For you to make that statement is vague. How would you know that he/she is 15 years old? even if you added 60 redirects, possibilities are that they are going to click on the over 18 to get a thrill. Now here`s where it gets complicated. As much as you are trying to run a perfect business. Some Agencies, like Net Nanny and others have made it impossible for anyone to run a business online. It is not up to the Store Owner to watch what their children are viewing. It is up to the parents to be responsible. But these companys have made it so impossible that some how it`s up to the store owner to disguise their Online Store... What about when you`re at t he mall and you walk through Fredicks of Hollywood?
Secondly, it would be wise to tell the search engines that you are selling adult products... You can do this by creating a meta tag that tells the search engines what your  content is about. Another issue you need to look at is your disclaimer. Remember, to add a 2257 notice to your web site. Regardless if you`re hard-core porn or soft-porn or something as a simple sexy lingerie store.
Add this to your header / Meta tags
    <meta name="rating" content="adult">

I took a look at your web site SANDYPI, and your web site shouldn`t have any problems ranking. But you have to do some extra leg work... Get rid of the Word "Sexual Predators" Use the word Predator since this would cover sexual, or any other types of predators.. Remember that the word Sex, sexual, sexy, are close to being banned from the search engines. So try a different approach. And when you optimize your site meaning creating the key words avoid the word sex or sexual... strip the front page of any derogatory words. For example: change the National Sexual Offender Database" to National Offenders Database... perhaps with a link to your FAQ`s or blog content explaining what you mean...
