Where we come from trust is earned... over time and with actions. If trust is broken it must be restored the same way... over time and with actions.
The only way we`ve built trust into our business is over time.
Think of marriage where the ultimate trust is necessary. No rules! What about forsaking all others and keeping yourself only for your spouse?
Currently Christie Brinkley and Cynthia Rodriquez (A-Rod`s wife) would have some strong opinions about trust.

Trust is gained only if it is given.  Loyalty is gained only if it is given.

I think, as business leaders, we need to give it first if we expect to receive it.

So you would give a convicted child molester your trust and allow your children to hang out in their home? A bit extreme to make a point...
Trust can only be given where there is confidence that a person can be relied on. We can give  somebody the opportunity to show they are trustworthy...  not the same as giving them our trust.
As they are faithful then our trust grows. But we do not have any basis for trust until they have the opportunity to earn our trust... either through others validation or our own experience with them.
As leaders we need to give people a little responsibility... see how they do with it. If faithful then give them a little more. If not... find someone who can be responsible.dsprindle7/15/2008 2:32 PM

BUT, as mentioned by Mike, trust is only gained if given. I believe that it is a question of finding the right people for your business culture, and saying that you would also need to screen people before giving them the job, so you don`t end up with a convicted child molester in a kindergarten.

The word that comes to mind is reciprocal. Sounds like trust is a two way give and take between people.
From a leadership perspective... isn`t a good leader someone who can develop trust in the workplace? Someone who can create the right environment for trust? For us that means giving opportunity... but within clear boundaries.
Guess we struggle with the idea of getting rid of the rules and regulations. Sounds a bit Utopian at first, but has lawlessness ever worked in any society... including a business community?
Personal freedom is the choice to either play by the rules of the game or not. We all need some measure of accountability. Left to ourselves don`t we all tend to do what`s best for me rather than the team?dsprindle7/15/2008 2:54 PM
