What is most important for ecommerce site?

edited December 2016 in E-Commerce
What are the most important activities to spend my time on for my ecommerce only site?  Is it link building, posting on social networks, working on the text, or something else?  I am trying to increase our visibility in the home decor and gift areas.

Thanks!
Tracy

The most important thing for any online business is "THE CONTENT"; it doesn`t matter how much social networking, linking building you do, in the end it comes down to "DID YOU CONVINCE THE READER" or in this case the customer.
You can spend hours, and weeks building your links but if the content is not there, you`re customers will visit but they will leave, just as fast as it took them to click on your Link AD.
Make sure your web site`s content is clean, and convincing, remember that the more information you offer a customer the easier it is to convince them. For example: if you`re selling cookies, you might want to create a nutrition guide with the ingredients. The KEY is to educate your customers even it it`s "only a cookie".
BUT! before you create the perfect content make sure that your web site is visible and accessible even if it`s through an IPHONE.
Make sure your site is coded correctly. Add the right keywords "relevant to your topic.
Submit your web site to search engines every 21 or 31 days, create a sitemap, robot.txt file and included in your web site.Nuevolution6/5/2008 5:05 PM

What to spend time on depends upon the condition of your ecommerce site. As Edgar says, your site needs to be ready to handle customers. If it is not, then time needs to spent there.
Promotion of your site is always a good idea and is a continual process, because new opportunities to market your site/services present themselves all the time.

Some basic "how do I get people to buy from me" suggestions.

You`ll need to identify where your target market "hangs out"... what are the avenues to reach them? Then promote your site there... and make sure to measure that promotional effort. Use a coupon code or special landing page for each promotion effort so you can see how each promotion affects your traffic and sales.

Disagree on this.  A sitemap should be re-generated and re-submitted whenever new pages or new blog posts are made to a site.  With Google, it`s done in the webmaster tools.  With Yahoo it`s a bit more complex.  I just wrote a blog post about it the other day (link below in my signature) on how to let Yahoo know when you have not only made changes to your site but how what`s needed to set your site in the Yahoo version of Google`s webmaster tools.

    Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for the input so far.  Our site is up and working and we handle orders without any problems.  Now, I`m just looking at ways to grow this particular website.  I run two aspects of the company.  One side (Mini Me Geology) has a website and sells products that we manufacture and lends itself to lots of contents and we have a blog.  The other is a site (GivernyOnline) where we resell items.  Since we strictly resell, GivernyOnline is a little more difficult to promote than the Mini Me Geology site.  The items we resell are home accents made of rocks and minerals.  I`m a geologist so I`m working on some contents which talks about the different rocks and minerals but I don`t think that is enough to drive people to the site.  I do think I`m missing a site map so I`ll look into that.

    Tracy,
If you ask me about rocks and minerals, well, the only thing that I know about a rock is that if you get hit with one it hurts. I think it would be a good approach if you were to educate the readers on the various types of rocks and minerals that can be used in a home to decorate. I think that if you creating a blog on "Givernyonline" and then cross-reference your blogs "Linking them to your products" it would help increase your web site`s credibility and visibility.
Now as for SDdreamweavers, blog? Well again, I don`t know how much of it "was written by him or if it was just a copy and paste project that was just modified to make it sound like he wrote it. But the truth is, that I do agree that every time you create a new page you have to edit your sitemap and resubmitted to the search engines. But just like you submit your sitemap, you should get in the practice of doing the same for the page that you just created.
Tracy, if you have tons of information on one site, why not link some articles back to your other web site?
As for CraigL, I didn`t know you were part of Merchant Circle.. Look me up and link up to me. whats your username? so I can look for you?

    SDDreamweaver,
There was no need for you to go there... Because believe me... if that was what we were doing you`d be out of the measuring contest long time ago... I think my two year old would be in second place... Oh wait... What is the SD? in front of Dreamweavers? I guess you live up to your name... "I don`t want to get graphical but I guess you can figure it out on your own"
Now for the sake of the thread..CraigL,
You made a point. When selling online it comes down to one thing and that is "Convince me, why I should by from you?
But you know what the problem is, that many e-shopper fall into whats called the confidence gap. The internet has alot to offer and most of the times the buyer makes a poor judgement.
Which is why the days of easy sales are over! and you must convince your customers by creating good content

    Edgar,
Just sent you an invitation from IB Designs,USA to link up. Craig and I
joined quite awhile ago and really like it there. There is a link in my
signature to the site on Merchant Circle.
    Tracy,
Joining there is great and Google does tend to crawl Merchant circle good. Building a Squidoo lens helps visibility also.
    Kathy

    Kathy,
I got your invitation.. thank you very much.. did you complete all your profile?

Thank you all for this wonderful thread! I started my business a few months ago.....and, I have to say.....nothing worth pursuing comes without alot of hard work and determination.......in generating content for our site, Iv`e teamed up with another one of my partners, and, we write roughly 4-6 articles a day, in order to provide content for the site.....it`s a massive task, combined with everything else we do to help build the foundation of the company.....

I did talk to an SEO specialist.....and, they said that there`s a magic number of 300 articles that need to be written and published on any given website, in order for Google to look favorable upon it in the search rankings........does anyone know if there`s any truth to this? Thank you!

Just something to add in I read an article about binoculars.com and the owner of that site said he would create another community site for each niche site he created. He stated in his article that he found out some of his target market was bird watchers. He created a bird watching site and heavily promotes binoculars.com on this site. He said this has been very beneficial for him.

E-commerce website concern i like to say that you have to do the SEO activities like off-page activity and on-page activity. As per the off-page activity concern you need to social bookmarking, directory submission, forum posting, blog posting, blog commenting, article submission etc. And As per the on-page activity concern you need to do pay per click, title tag, meta description, internal linking etc.

You have the arrangement to offer on the web. You've chosen what will offer, you've chosen to utilize WooCommerce, and now you have to outline your store.
This stage can be troublesome. Finding that flawless topic, or notwithstanding selecting an architect who comprehends your objectives, can gobble up time you don't have. Also, in the event that you've never sold on the web, you may feel as though you're hunting down something that just "looks decent," without having a strong handle on what's truly imperative.

    1.Easily comprehended route

2.Compatibility with all gadgets and screen sizes

3.Quick stacking times for each page

4.Make utilization of clear, wonderful pictures

Nothing is more frustrating then using the search feature on an E-Commerce site and receiving dozens of results that don’t match what you were looking for. Make sure your E-Commerce site uses competent, reliable search engine software, and allow filtering for more refined search options if you maintain a large inventory of products.
