  When a "naked license" is granted, the license is deemed to constitute the owner’s abandonment of rights in the trademark.  Trademark owners and their lawyers should work together to ensure that the owners regularly and effectively monitor the quality of the products and services for which the licensees use the trademark.

  Trademark is the only way to protect your business intellectual rights. If you feel you have a threat to your brand identity please approach an IP lawyer and move ahead with the registration. However it is not mandatory to register them if that is what you meant.
