Guest Blogging and Google

As I am learning about the importance of backlinks in SEO, I started researching about guest blogging. I love to write, believe I do it pretty well and can write interesting content. Of course one of the payoffs to doing this, would be for the backlinks. I read an article about Google starting to penalize guest blog sites they felt had spam blog content, only created for backlinks, regardless of if this was true or not. Thoughts?

Basically, its okay as long as the links are "No follow".

We don't do this, it's better to let folks review your product, and if they want to link back, no follow is fine, if they don't... we're still grateful for the publicity.

I guess in a way, if you are writing decent content and people are interested, they will navigate to your page anyway. This will help ranking in a more organic way. But it is getting harder and harder for us little guys to garner ANY ranking on Google without PPC, which we, for one, cannot afford.

In this case, you should find really valuable sites for guest blogging to gain credibility. Even the fact you write on such websites helps a lot.

I agree that it is getting hard for the little guys to be involved and doing all SEO techniques. I suppose one simply has to pick and choose what is most cost and time effective.

Yes, you are right. Google has recently penalized a major guest posting network i.e. myblogguest.com. So all good authority guest posting sites are giving a No Follow link.

I do agree that now Google has started penalizing the site which allows guest blogging. But it does not apply to all the guest blogging sites. If you are having great content on your site and allowing only those guest posts which follow all the Google guidelines, then you are free from being penalized by the Google. So, the solution is that, for guest post you should have original content and should follow all the guidelines.

I think the reason why Google is starting to penalize guest blogging because people is abusing it for the sake of SERP ranking. Guest blogging is not natural anymore, even some start to monetize it.

As long as, your guest blogging comes natural, as part of sharing important piece of information and having a value added for the reader, I belive that it should be ok.

Though even with a no follow, I heard a link back with no follow still helps with your reputation as far as SEO.
