I have several sites under my wings and I have never spend more than a few hundreds on them.

Here, I would like to show you how to select a good designer for cheap.

Gone are the days when you have to pay through the nose to get a site newly set up and called it your own.

If you need a ecommerce site, you can always go to
-shopify
-bigcommerce
-mangento
to set it up in a tiffy.

Each of the product has it pros and cons. If you are someone who bought a iphone just for calling, you can settle with shopify which tends to be more user friendly.

So that leads to the second part, what if you needs just a simple site like any content site?

There is always a wordpress where you can get for free.

Does design really matters?

Yes and no.

Yes if you are doing selling web design service to clients.

More often than not, overdesign leads to slow site performance which leads to SEO penalty and lower conversion (read as higher cost per customer acquisition)

My advice for you is to go bare and see how your customers react to it and improve from there.
