independant info. pro (entrepreneur) business, how to ?

Can you share some insights of some of what it takes to become an independant information pro (solo entrepreneur) whose information business (information broker, consultant and / or investigative journalist) does depend the least possible on a limited geographical location ?  ( I need to ask that question on a forum as part of a work in a course call '' advanced managment of info services '' ) . Thanks a lot in advance.
