Crowdsourcing as a way to build customer base

I was wondering what does every one think of crowdsourcing as a means for creating a customer base? If done correctly wouldn't it be a much easier format to use as opposed to marketing? You wouldn't have to search as much and you would basically be harnessing the leverage of eveyone as opposed to just a particular group of people.
