Who owns the press list

I volunteered to help a small non-profit with their PR (I`m not in PR.) I
had a lot of success and after several years of working as a volunteer they
paid me a small monthly fee that covered a tenth of my time.

Though I support their mission, they became very demanding (and
successful!) wanting more results without additional payment. I politely
declined to work with them. They`ve hired someone to handle PR and
requested I give them the list of press contacts that I developed over the
years so they can pass this along to the new person.

What is the industry standard in a situation such as this? It seems that in
PR your contacts are what`s valuable and you wouldn`t pass those along to
a former client.
