I heard that term years ago, before the Y2K hullabaloo happened. Are these things still around? What exactly do they do? (...or did?)

Vibes, the word incubator means "a controlled environment." A business incubator is basically a controlled business environment. The idea of  business incubation originated in the U.S. in the 1960`s. Elaborating further, business incubators are specialized structural organizations that support and nurture entrepreneurs. Here`s how business incubators work:
Entrepreneurs with viable business ideas and/or projects are carefully selected and admitted into the incubators. What happens then is the entrepreneurs are given specialized support and resources, which include but are not limited to administrative assistance, management, coaching, technical support, business networking, office space and financial assistance. Business incubators can be private or public - and yes, business incubators still exist.
    Hope this answers your question.
