Software copyright

Hi, I would like to get into software developing for the Android phones. I see a lot of the programs available on iPhone are not available for Android, and would like to fill a few of those gaps. But i'm wondering, can I just go and code an app that already exists on iPhone without getting into the copyright issues? If yes, can I just call my app something else and not worry about it, even if the app has the same idea? It looks like a lot of these iPhone apps are not copyrighted.
