Copy Content from Free Content Sites

Has anyone copied and pasted free content from sites that legally allow you to just copy and paste articles to you site?

Has anyone seen improvement in the search engine rankings becuase of more content or was it just a waste of time? Or is it better to write your own articles?

I haven`t looked into it for my sites yet, but there are a number of newspapers and news aggregators who will permit you to receive news for free by RSS.

I always add my own twist to the articles.
However I only use this tactic when I`m really really stuck coming up with new content.

Search engines have a way of knowing who the original is by the # of links an article has. They also log crawl dates. Say you (legally) copy an article off some site, and have more inbound links to your article than the original has. Most likely you will rank higher in the search engines for whatever the subject of the article was, and the other site will get the duplicate content penalty (usually). Sometimes both sites can get hit with the penalty though.
If you are gonna add your own twist, it may be in your best interest to only quote part of the article and link to the original, to help avoiding the duplicate content issue. I am not certain but there may also be a quote tag you can add in the coding of the site to let the search engines know part of your webpage is in fact a quote, and not unique content. It`s similar to the nofollow tag that you are supposed to use on sold links, to let the search engines know that the link should not be providing any link juice for ranking purposes.

It is just a waste of time to buy articles from free content sites. It is always good to write yourself fresh content according to requirement.
