Can I use outdated software?

I`m looking to purchase software that can do accounts receivable, payable, print invoices, etc. This software is a bit pricey, and being the ever frugal person I am, I`m looking to get it for cheaper. I found the same software for much cheaper, but it is a 2006 version. I`m assuming this would be okay, but just wanted to make sure, as I`m not only very frugal, but very cautious as well, and don`t want to purchase the wrong thing!
