How many startup in US/bay area?

Does anyone know how I would be able to find the number/size/etc of the startups in the US (or even just the bay area)? Any potential databases (free would be great)? Thanks for all your help!

Try joining trade associations of your respective industry. You get a better feel of things that way and have a chance to learn with your peers.
