Im in a situation where the construction company I work for has an in-house designer. I know they want to get rid of him (cost) and would rather just pay for an outside designer on a contract basis.
I am thinking of leaving the company and starting a small design firm since Im almost guaranteed business from my current employer. I cant design yet, but have experience in the field. I thought I would just hire a recent grad to do the design for now while I train to be a designer.
Could this work out?? Have any tips or ideas?
Should I actually hire someone or should I just use them as an outsourced basis??

How can you exactly guarantee that your new hire would be at par with the design levels. This is a rocky situation which would be a whole lot different if you are confident in your own designs first.what if your desgn proposals are turned down? what do you think can happen?

I`m with Mack - you sound 100% sure of getting the business but what if you don`t? Why don`t you ask first? They may assign you extra work though without any more pay lol

Im a 100% sure because the owner of the company is my wife`s uncle and my father-in-law is the General Manager. Even the average small design contract well exceeds their pay.

The design isnt hard. Pretty much anyone who is trained can make quality prints.
Good point about being confident with my own designing first. It would put the contractors and myself at ease with a little more confidence
