business question -phones

Do small businesses have a need for phones and outside operators/receptionists? If so, do you use a service, virtual assistant or just let complaints and questions go to voice mail? Do you even use a phone number for your business or let all questions/issues and complaints go to voice mail?

A lot depends on the type of business and the urgency of the inquiry.
When you're starting out a cellphone may be enough. You can progress to an answering service or virtual assistant.
I like to use Google Voice, it's not available in all parts of the world, but it provides a virtual number which can be forwarded to different numbers at different times, or even multiple numbers. It will even transcribe the message and email it to you.
You need a Gmail account, but it's free. Check it out here, http://google.com/voice
