How to learn about a product that interests you

Hi folks - I'm new here but been lurking for some time.
I have a novel idea for a new way to use an already existing commercial product. In order to possibly capitalize on the idea, I need to better understand how the product works. Where would one go to get help on understanding the technology and engineering issues behind a specific product? In my case, it has to do with fabrics and cloths.
Thanks in advance for any insights,
DavidvsGoliath

If you are worried about getting a negative response, you would be surprised at how helpful people can be when you are upfront and honest.
1) start by reading, books, websites, blogs, magazine
2) get in touch with manufacturers, brokers, buyers , users and sellers of the product
3) attend trade shows where the product is talked about (extremely valuable experience)
