Does social media help us to get a higher rank?

Hello Guys,
I've read lots of articles about SEO and Social Media but still can't find the answer of the question: Does Social Media help us to get higher rank in search engines?
One of the last articles I read was named: SEO and Social Media - Friends or strangers? It looks the article summarizes some opinions about this topic.
As far as I know Social Networks help us to increase the traffic to certain website but don't play role for link building. I mean, if I have a website and share link on Facebook 100 times, will this affect the results in Google? Will I get higher rank? If I have 5000 followers on Twitter, will Google detect this?
I'll be glad if you help me to find the answers of this questions.
