Is calculating your exit useful in business planning?

Hey everyone, I am a young entrepreneur with a new start up idea. I have been seeking advice from mentors and I have received a lot of feedback talking about the importance of calculating your exit or starting with the end in mind. My question is, is it that important? What does this give you? And does anyone know of any useful and accurate tools I could utilise to calculate my exit effectively? Thanks in advance for your feedback I really appreciate it.
